Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm whole milk (about 110°F)
  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) instant yeast
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 6 tbsp melted butter, divided, plus more for brushing
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • flaky salt for the tops (optional)

Steps

  1. Stir the milk, yeast and sugar in a large bowl. Add the egg and 4 tbsp of the melted butter, then the flour and salt, and mix into a soft dough.
  2. Knead until smooth and elastic, 6 to 8 minutes. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  3. Divide into 16 pieces. Roll each into an oval about 4 x 3 inches, brush with a little of the remaining butter, and fold in half so the top half sits slightly short of the bottom edge.
  4. Arrange on a lined sheet pan about 1 inch apart. Cover and let rise until puffy, 30 to 40 minutes. Heat the oven to 375°F.
  5. Bake 15 to 18 minutes, until golden. Brush with more butter and sprinkle with flaky salt.

TipFreeze baked rolls in a bag; rewarm them wrapped in foil at 350°F for 10 to 12 minutes.
