Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 1/4 oz rich simple syrup (2 parts sugar to 1 part water), or 1 sugar cube
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters (optional)
  • 1 large ice cube or ice sphere, plus ice for stirring
  • 1 wide strip of orange peel
  • 1 cocktail cherry (optional)

Steps

  1. Add the syrup and bitters to a mixing glass. (If using a sugar cube, muddle it with the bitters and a teaspoon of water until dissolved.)
  2. Add the whiskey and fill the glass with ice. Stir 20 to 30 seconds, until well chilled and slightly diluted.
  3. Put one large ice cube or sphere in a rocks glass and strain the drink over it.
  4. Squeeze the orange peel, skin side down, over the glass to release its oils, rub it around the rim, and drop it in. Add a cherry if you like.

TipBig ice melts slowly, so the drink stays cold without getting watery; make clear cubes with a small insulated mold.
