Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 tsp matcha powder (ceremonial or latte grade)
  • 2 oz hot water (about 175°F, not boiling)
  • 1 cup whole milk or oat milk
  • 1 to 2 tsp honey, maple syrup or sugar

Steps

  1. Sift the matcha into a wide mug or small bowl to remove any lumps.
  2. Add the hot water and whisk briskly in a zigzag motion with a bamboo whisk or small whisk until smooth and foamy, about 30 seconds.
  3. Heat the milk with the sweetener until steaming, then froth it with a frother or by shaking it in a tightly closed jar.
  4. Pour the milk into the matcha, holding back the foam with a spoon, then spoon the foam on top. For iced, whisk the matcha, pour over ice and top with cold milk.

TipWater that's too hot turns matcha bitter; let boiled water sit about 2 minutes before you whisk.
