Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • For rolling: 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tbsp ground cinnamon

Steps

  1. Heat the oven to 375°F and line baking sheets with parchment.
  2. Whisk the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt.
  3. Beat the butter and sugar until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Beat in the eggs and vanilla, then mix in the flour mixture on low.
  4. Roll the dough into 1 1/2-inch balls and roll each in cinnamon sugar. Space 2 inches apart.
  5. Bake 9 to 11 minutes, until the edges are set but the centers still look soft. Cool 5 minutes on the pan.

TipFor a fall twist, add 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice to the cinnamon sugar.
